E. O. Wilson’s “Consilience” (Book Review)

This week’s “Book of the Week” is Edward O. Wilson’s classic 1999 book, Consilience.  Wilson is one of my heroes – he is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and the author of the famous (and one-time controversial) book on the genetic and evolutionary underpinnings of behavior, Sociobiology.  In Consilience, Wilson argues for a unity of knowledge of the universe – basically, that there is harmony between the principles of phyics, chemistry, biology – and ultimately human behavior, art, and music as well.  He believes that everything is built on the building blocks of basic physics, and that ultimately everything can be understood to, at some level, be completely made up of physical components.  Perhaps this is (to some) “common sense”, but I think it has far-reaching consequences that are not always fully appreciated.
